For normal people, SpO2 would reach to 98%~100%. Patients who have coronavirus infection, and for mild and moderate cases, SpO2 may not be significantly affected.
For severe and critically ill patients, they have difficulty breathing, and oxygen saturation may decrease. In severe cases, respiratory failure may even occur, with oxygen saturation lower than 90%. Blood gas analysis shows that oxygen partial pressure of respiratory failure will be lower than 60%. For difficult to correct hypoxemia, endotracheal intubation and invasive ventilator are needed to assist breathing to prevent systemic functional impairment caused by low oxygen concentration
If the patient is an elderly patients, or always, there is a chronic airway disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or pulmonary fibrosis, this kind of patient blood oxygen saturation is very low at ordinary times, may be lower than 90%, even less tolerant in the long term, severe cases of such a patient with novel coronavirus infection will experience rapid desaturation of oxygen saturation, which is lower than usual.
